Memorial for Dogs That Died in Borodyanka Shelter in Spring 2022

AZOU

On July 14, 2023, a memorial event was held in Kyiv for dogs that died in the municipal shelter in Borodyanka.

At the beginning of the Russian invasion, the shelter housed about 450 animals, of which 222 died of hunger and thirst in locked enclosures.

Unlike volunteer shelters, where no volunteer abandoned the animals, the head of the municipal facility did not evacuate the dogs despite having resources to do so.

Volunteers, risking their lives, carried animals out of combat zones and transported them abroad. After the occupation of Borodyanka, volunteers were the first to arrive at the shelter when the facility staff had abandoned it.

The animals could not survive the terrible month without food and water.

Despite a petition to dismiss the director, the management has kept her in position.
