Contact Zoos Are Evil
Contact zoos are evil.
Animals are almost always kept in improper conditions (cramped, stuffy, poorly lit rooms or cages).
The diet does not match the species’ biological needs (for example, carrots, apples, cucumbers, and cabbage, which should make up only a fraction of a rabbit’s diet, are fed all day because children enjoy feeding rabbits crunchy pieces).
The animal has no opportunity to hide from visitors or rest even briefly. If it does not want contact, it has no choice either — because this is exactly what contact zoo owners profit from. Thousands of hands, hugs, squeezes, grabs at skin, tail, and ears.
Constant screaming from dozens or hundreds of children, noise, crying, and shrieking (every day from morning to evening) — this is an additional negative impact on the psyche of the captive animal.
Sick animals are not treated because it’s expensive. They are fed to predators.
Animals frequently suffer injuries, disabilities, or even death from children’s overly tight hugs, from being dropped, and from other careless handling.
Animals in contact zoos pose a danger to humans due to the risk of bites and other injuries.
Animals are most often not vaccinated against rabies and other zoonotic diseases. Contact with such animals poses a significant risk to human health and life.
Children do not learn to understand animals or nature through such zoos. An animal in the wild and the same species in a contact zoo behave completely differently. In captivity, a wild animal does not exhibit natural behavior, and children learn the distorted notion that wild animals in captivity is normal.
Animals in contact zoos can be poisoned, burned, or deliberately maimed — simply because animal abusers can walk in.
Therefore, a complete legislative ban on contact zoos would be the best option. Any contact zoo is evil.
