Roundtable Held in Lebedyn
On March 27, 2017, a roundtable meeting dedicated to solving the stray animal problem through humane methods was held in the city of Lebedyn, Sumy Oblast.
The event was organized in response to the mass poisoning of dogs in the city.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the public organization “Lebedyn Animal Protection Society” led by Alla Simashova, experts from Kharkiv: Maryna Surkova (AZOU Vice President) and Iryna Podvoyska (head of the “Good Home” animal rescue service), as well as representatives of local authorities, education, and veterinary services.
Participants discussed a comprehensive approach to solving the problem, including sterilization, rabies vaccination, and microchipping of stray animals. The need for subsidized mass sterilization and promotion of responsible pet ownership was emphasized.
Mayor Oleksandr Baklykov and his deputy Olha Zikeyeva agreed that the key problem lies in people’s irresponsible attitude toward animals. Experts presented a Stray Animal Population Control Program, which was planned to be reviewed by local government bodies.
